Sopwell House is an elegant Georgian country house set within 12 acres of landscaped Hertfordshire countryside on Cottonmill Lane in St Albans. Rich in history and character, it offers a timeless setting for weddings, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, private dining and celebrations of up to 300 guests. What distinguishes it is range: 19 flexible event spaces, indoor and outdoor, with licensed rooms for civil ceremonies and gardens and terraces that earn their place in the day, all supported by an experienced in-house events team. For a stylist, that range is both the pleasure and the discipline. A celebration here rarely happens in one room, so the design has to travel intact from ceremony to dining to dancing. We work at Sopwell House regularly, roughly thirty minutes from our Harrow workshop, and know how those spaces connect.
How do you design across a house with 19 spaces?
By choosing one idea and letting it develop rather than repeat. A palette, a flower story and a lighting temperature are established at the ceremony, deepened over dinner and warmed for the evening. Guests should feel they have moved through a single, considered day, not attended three separately decorated parties.
Practically, that means florals designed as a family of arrangements at different scales, table centres that echo the ceremony work, and uplighting reset between rooms so the same colours read correctly against very different wall finishes.
What styling packages are available at Sopwell House?

- Reception Package: £1,000. A 20ft 3D backdrop with a white base, coloured curtains, hanging crystals and uplights; table centres; LED uplighting across the venue.
- Civil Ceremony & Reception: £1,850. White aisle carpet, a civil ceremony backdrop, pew-end floral arrangements, a head table backdrop, table centres and LED uplighting.
- Asian Wedding & Reception: £4,500. A 20ft x 12ft x 1ft stage, white carpet for stage and aisle, a four-pillar premium mandap, foyer display, head table backdrop, table centres and LED uplighting.

How do you style a Georgian interior respectfully?
Lightly. Period rooms already carry proportion, moulding and colour, and the temptation to add more is worth resisting. We work freestanding, avoid fixings entirely, use LED sources rather than flame, and let light do the transforming: a wash across a cornice or a window reveal will change a Georgian room more completely than any amount of fabric.
Can family abroad watch a Sopwell House wedding?
Yes. Live streaming is a frequent request here, and we run it on a dedicated connection with proper audio and a discreet camera position, so it never intrudes on the room.
