Venue draping is the technique of dressing a room in fabric, across ceilings, along walls and behind key focal points, to change its proportions, soften its surfaces and give an event a cohesive setting. Avari Events has been designing and installing bespoke draping for weddings, corporate events and private celebrations since 2009, working throughout London and the surrounding counties. Our designs run from pleated wall drapes and swag detailing to full ceiling draping and starlit backdrops, each specified to the colour palette and theme of the event rather than pulled from a standard kit. Because we install on freestanding systems, drapes can be built in venues where nothing may be fixed to the fabric of the building. The result is a room that feels intimate rather than cavernous, with unwanted fixtures concealed and the acoustics noticeably warmer.
What can venue draping actually do to a room?
Three things, usually at once. It changes scale, bringing a ceiling visually lower or narrowing an over-large hall so a hundred guests feel like a full room rather than a scattered one. It conceals: fire doors, service hatches, radiators and tired wall finishes vanish behind a clean drape line, which matters enormously in photographs. And it warms the acoustics, because soft fabric absorbs the reflections that make hard-surfaced halls feel echoey during speeches.
What styles of draping do you offer?
Pleated wall draping is the workhorse: a continuous, softly gathered perimeter that gives a room a finished edge. Swag detailing adds movement and a sense of occasion above doorways, top tables and stages. Ceiling draping is the most transformative, sweeping fabric from a central point outwards to create a canopy over the whole room. Starlit backdrops thread points of light through the fabric for ceremonies, stage sets and dancefloor walls. Most events combine two or three of these, tied together with creative lighting.
How much does venue draping cost?
Draping starts from £750 and is quoted by the linear metre of wall, the ceiling area covered and the complexity of the detailing. A single feature backdrop sits at one end of that range; a full ceiling installation across a large hall sits at the other. Every quotation includes delivery, installation and pack-down by our own crew.
Does draping work in listed and historic venues?
It is often the only option. Because our systems are freestanding, we can dress a barn, a marquee, a hotel ballroom or a listed hall without drilling, rigging from the structure or leaving a mark. We survey the space first, note the access routes and fixed obstacles, and design the drape line around them.
Which events do you drape?
Draping is specified for weddings, receptions and gala dinners, conferences, award ceremonies and exhibitions. For Asian weddings it is usually planned in the same design conversation as mandap hire, so the ceremony canopy and the surrounding room share one palette.

Does draping damage the venue?
No. Our draping is installed on freestanding systems, so nothing is fixed to walls or ceilings. This also makes us welcome in listed buildings and hotels where rigging from the structure is not permitted.
Can draping hide the things we would rather not see?
That is one of its most practical uses. Fire doors, service hatches, radiators, patterned carpets at the perimeter and dated wall finishes all disappear behind a drape line, leaving a clean backdrop for photography.
Will draping change how the room sounds?
Soft fabric absorbs reflected sound, so a hard-surfaced hall feels warmer and speeches carry more clearly. In larger rooms we plan draping alongside the sound design with our audio visual team.
Can the drapes match our colour scheme?
Drapes are specified to your palette and finished with pleating, swag detailing or starlit backdrops as the design requires. Uplighting is often used to shift the tone of a neutral drape through the evening.
How long does installation take?
A typical ceremony or reception room is draped in a few hours, though ceiling installations and larger halls need longer. We agree access times with your venue in advance and always build well ahead of guest arrival.
